Am I the only one who thinks that the icon for the messaging menu in its default no messages waiting state was infinitely better looking in Karmic?
Is it just me or does that icon not match the others at all. The colors are off, the weight is different, it even looks like it’s a different size. Now the old default, no-messages icon was so much closer to perfect-
See how the icon is the same fill color as the panel? If it had the same color, but bold lines as the others with this fill style- it would look incredible!
That said, everything else in Lucid rules! Best release ever, I know we say that every time, but it’s always true!

I think the spacing makes it look a little weird too. There is a little gap between the evolution clock applet and the me menu and it makes it looks strange to me. The older icon for available used to be a lot better looking IMO. Other than that I like it too.
Yeah, you’re right. Lucid looks like butt.
@rich If your butt looks like THAT, we should probably have a discrete night out.
Actually the evolution gap was fixed when I removed and added it to the panel again.
@Rich I dont think he meant lucid “looks like butt” I think he meant that there was something that looked strange to him. It actually looks great, the best looking free desktop around IMO.
I’m with you on the messaging icon.
On an unrelated note, how did you get that monochrome banshee icon? On my system (using the ambient theme) I have the old icon with a light background. There’s a bug in launchpad about it somewhere that said the problem was in banshee itself and not the theme.
@ssweeny It’s from the application-indicator plugin from the banshee community extensions.. http://gitorious.org/banshee-community-extensions
Totally agree. New icon is terrible. Nuff said.
The rhythmbox icon (when not playing) uses the same color as the messaging icon.
@lamalex this is sweet. Do you happen to know if these extensions (specifically the u1 music store and app indicator) are going to be pushed to lucid? Not that it really matters; I generally use the banshee ppa anyway.
It’s a stateful indicator. It’s darkgrey when active (messages waiting), and lightgrey when not (like the rhythmbox indicator). I actually like it.
@jeff It doesn’t fit better at all, look at the picture, it’s clearly an entirely different color from the other icons.
@ttx I understand it’s a stateful indicator, but the light grey when nothing is waiting totally breaks with the colors of the other icons. Look at the MeMenu Icon, the session indicator, the volume indicator, and the weather icons. Their lines are dark by default, and fall through to panel color. The messaging icon is the opposite, it’s lines fall through to panel, not the fill. And it’s not dark grey when active, it’s shamrock-shake green.
I love it actually. Elegant, smooth, fits much better with the other icons (also love the new weather icon). It’s also more easily visible when a new message arrives.
I don’t see how it’s worse at all.
Oh, and sorry to be annoying, but isn’t the space actually *better* with the new icon? The left and right spaces were too big in the old one.
Plus, it’s only a “different colour” if there are no new messages. Probably the same colour as when the sound is muted. Hopefully also the same colour as when Banshee isn’t playing (though I doubt that).
I actually like the Lucid look more
Care to say what versions of GNOME those are? I can’t keep track of what I assume are Ubuntu release names.
@Merzad Gnome 2.30. Ubuntu 10.04.
