Just wanted to show off this money shot of Banshee loading an Audio CD sans HAL, doing it raw with gio/udev. I don’t have audio players working yet, but I’m fairly confident that it’s just a matter of getting a firmer grasp on some of the more subtle aspects of Banshee’s hardware class hierarchy. If anyone wants to help, the code lives in git at http://gitorious.org/~lamalex/banshee/lamalex-udev in master. I’m a little bit concerned that iPod support will take even longer due to one of the libraries Banshee uses for iPod support, podsleuth, being very HAL dependent. My plan is to at least get everything else working before I attempt open up that can of worms. Less talk, more rock! Pics or gtfo.

Even the newest iPods work with rhythmbox, thanks to libgpod. Banshee should switch to it.
Many Many thanks! Missing hardware support is why i migrated to rhythmbox.
I know HAL is being deprecated and all but I thought it would be replaced by DeviceKit, not udev. As a FreeBSD user I don’t see it being a good thing. HAL is apparently too complex for its own good but it did an ok job at making stuff almost work out of the box.
Hope I’m missing something.
It’s really confusing, there’s been a lot of turn over in the past year. HAL was deprecated in favor of DeviceKit, then DeviceKit was deprecated (or just changed maybe since it never really had time to catch on) to DeviceKit-Disks and DeviceKit-Power, both of which were dbus front ends for udev, one for disks and one for power, obviously. NOW DeviceKit-Disks and DeviceKit-Power are being changed and renamed to udisks and upower.
It’s a mixed up world, HAL was great at providing hardware support out of the box and I still don’t really know why it was deprecated- but it was, so we need to make sure we support the latest and greatest.
I suggest to quit listenening to that nazi asshole from Burzum
Varg makes the worlds best black metal, I couldn’t care less if he’s a nazi. When he stops making perfect black metal albums, I’ll stop buying his records.
Oh yeah, and Varg is one of my idols.
This is great work Alex!

Um… not sure if you realized, but one of the album covers in your screenshot is NSFW.
Ha! Didn’t notice, but definitely don’t care!
I support all appeals to the prurient interest.
